‘Guns & Gulaabs’ has many elements that make it exceptional and delightful. It brings smiles to your face and occasionally offers a sense of completeness. This crime drama series not only pays tribute to the 90s era but is also filled with action and entertainment. From the melodies of R.D. Burman to Gulshan Devaiah’s distinct hairstyle reminiscent of Sanjay Dutt from the 90s, and even Tipu’s half sweater similar to Amitabh Bachchan’s in ‘Don’, all these aspects showcase the deep love of directors Raj and DK for the 90s decade.
‘Guns & Gulaabs’ isn’t just a good story; it also touches your heart due to its exceptional performances. The main cast of the series executes their roles skillfully, while even lesser-known actors leave an impact. Raj and DK create a universe where most people are involved in illegal activities. The story is centered around the city of Gulabganj, which houses an opium factory.
A significant part of the local production is under government surveillance. Local mafia leader Ganchi (played by the late Satish Kaushik) has established a kingdom around the illicit opium trade. In his endeavour’s, Police Superintendent Mishra assists him. A former associate of Ganchi, Nabeed, breaks away to establish a rival gang in the city of Sherpur. Arjun Verma (Dulquer Salmaan), an officer from the Narcotics Control Bureau, is transferred to Gulabganj. Arjun’s focus is on the illegal opium transactions of both gangs.
Running parallel to this story is another tale featuring Tipu (Rajkummar Rao), a motorcycle mechanic. Tipu’s father was once part of Ganchi’s gang. He played a crucial role in expanding the senior Ganchi’s empire. Two goons murder Tipu’s father, unwittingly leading Tipu to become a part of Ganchi’s gang as he seeks revenge for their deaths. This series stands out for its unique and interesting characters. These characters seamlessly blend into the plot and the local background.
Satish Kaushik, in the role of Senior Ganchi for the initial two episodes, enhances the show’s appeal. Watching his mastery on screen is both heartwarming and saddening. Rajkummar Rao has immersed himself in the role of Tipu. He portrays an ordinary person effectively. Tipu’s interactions with his friends Banti and assistant mechanic Kumarkat in the mechanic shop are among the best parts of the series.
Dulquer Salmaan is making his debut in Hindi web series. His performance is noteworthy and offers lessons in natural and simple acting. Adarsh Gourav, known for his splendid role in ‘The White Tiger’, leaves another strong impression. His work towards the end of the series is akin to a masterclass. Gulshan Devaiah appears swiftly in the role of the contract killer Atmaram, who comes across as menacing in reality. Additionally, TJ Bhanu as a school teacher and Tipu’s girlfriend Chandralekha has done well. The group of kids in the series also feels genuine on screen.
